We’ve had elements of this conversation before, but it’s worth repeating…everyone grab a seat and be honest with the series of questions I’m about to hit you with. The first, how many of you reading this have A Facebook account? Good. I can sense a lot of hands up. What about a Tumblr account? Ah, I see some hands fell. Don’t worry…what about Pinterest? You guys are on Pinterest right? Interesting. Well, how many of your marketing gurus out there have an email account? Did your eyes just light up? Think about it — who on Earth doesn’t have an email? I think even my Grandmother has an email. True story.

Email Marketing Tips

Today we are assuming you have some sort of email marketing in place and are looking for actionable ways to amp up your marketing. EXCELLENT. We have just the fix for you readers. Today we’re going to cover email marketing tips the pros use and if you follow what we’re saying you’ll see huge conversions on your website. Let’s get to it.

1. Tag Your Contacts

You have a contact list. Whether it’s 200 hundred users or 20K — you need to tag the hell out of them and you need to do this early. Nothing hurts more than having to go back through your entire contact list and try to figure out how to tag users.

What’s a tag you ask?

It’s simple. You have prospects who are at different stages of your sales and marketing funnel. Some may by Hot Leads ready to buy, others may be Dead Leads with no interest in your services. You need to take a step back and look at the lifespan of your client. From there you want to create at least one tag that speaks to them.

It’s simple. You have prospects who are at different stages of your sales and marketing funnel. Some may by Hot Leads ready to buy, others may be Dead Leads with no interest in your services. You need to take a step back and look at the lifespan of your client. From there you want to create at least one tag that speaks to them.

What do you do with these tags?

After your list is all tagged up, it’s basic automation. Behind the scenes, you should be leveraging some sort of email marketing platform. On it, you will design emails that you go out based on tags.

2.   Don’t Buy Lists

It is very tempting to buy a list when you have zero contacts. It is crazy easy to do. Picture this, day one you launch your company with zero leads, day two you buy a list with 50K prospects on it. Surely one of them will convert to clients, right?

Well, I’d be very careful about buying lists. There are rules and laws out that prevent this from happening. If you get caught a few crappy things will happen to you. For starters, you could get blacklisted. What sucks about this is you may not even know you’re blacklisted. Your emails will just stop making it to your contacts inboxes.

The next thing that can happen your IP address could be shut down. This one hurts your wallet. Especially if you’re using an email marketing software solution. They drive to maintain clean IP Address so everyone can send out messages. If you buy a list and prospects report you, they could very well shut you down and hit you with a hefty fine. Avoid it. You don’t need that type of stress in your life.

3.   Keep The Messages Direct

Think like your consumers. Where do they check their emails? Most actually check on their cellphones. So what you want to do is focus on building email campaigns that are first and foremost mobile friendly.

Tricks email marketing pros use to convert with email marketing are:

  • Making the subject line catchy and feature the offer.
  • Have bold headers in the email making it easy to skim.
  • Having  clear call to actions so prospects know exactly what to do when they get your message.

Final Thoughts…

Email marketing is cost effective and smart but does require a ton of prep. You need to design the email campaigns, build tags and segments, implement tracking, the works. Be prepared to spend a good month building these assets before launching your email marketing.

With that said, the payoff for email marketing is insane. If you have the tools in place you can constantly be upgrading your messaging and trying out new call to actions till you hit that magic sweet spot for your brand.
